about

What annoys me about this song is that grammatically it's incorrect! It should be "go to the races more often", but it doesn't scan. Ha!!
It's just a song about taking more chances. That's all the song is about.
You never know, with this attitude there may be "A Turn Up For The Books".

Musically, I built it up from nothing. I built it up from a click track and an acoustic guitar. Then I added on drums which I played myself, some more guitars, and when Pino came over he played the bass on it. That must have been hard for him; playing bass to my drumming, but God bless him he did it. Mark Feltham plays harmonica on it and then at home I got Frazer to do some violin.

Steve Smith (full and professional name: Stephen Darrell Smith) played lovely Fender Rhodes piano on this track.
He engineered and co-produced this album. I could not in a million years have done it without him!
Skillful, tasteful, knowledgeable and patient, as an engineer, producer and musician! Thanks Steve, you're a top man x

lyrics

See my face out on the river
Striking for the distant shore
With all the things I can deliver
I'm gonna raid the store
And go to the races more

Now I know which way the wind blows
Now I'm fighting in the war
Tired of sitting in the window
Step through the open door
Go to the races more

Is it me that's being distant
Calling from a foreign shore
Fight against so much resistance
I know I've found a cure
I'll go to the races more

I hoped that love would find the answer
Put my body to the fore
Break the rules just like a chancer
Breaking up every law
And go to the races more
And go to the races more
Get down to the races more
