about

I'd been riffing around at home with my acoustic and I just ended up singing "trouble will soon be over" and it seemed to fit. I'm a big fan of Blind Willie Johnson, so I just thought why not do a cover of that song although I didn't intend that when I started out riffing, but that's the way it ended up.
"I'd talk to God if he could hear me, with only myself to praise - I'd talk to God if he was near me, and pray for better days".
That's not actually Blind Willie Johnson's lyric, but I'm not going to take any writing credit for it because as far as I'm concerned it's a Blind Willie Johnson song and I just added one of my own verses, just as I suppose lots of people have done to blues or, in this case, gospel songs over the years. I'm sure a lot of blues purists are going to hate it, because it's made it from Blind Willie Johnson to Jack Johnson!! But I just love the groove of it.
I was staying at a Hotel in New York and had my acoustic guitar with me. I didn't have a microphone with me so I just used the microphone in the laptop and a simple bit of software called Garageband. I did a demo of the song and then I took it back to Steve Smith's and we gradually replaced everything; Paul Beavis replaced the drums with real drums, I re-did the acoustic guitar although I kept one guitar part from NYC hotel room. It's such a poor quality that you can't really hear it that well but it adds something to the track and some continuity.
I got Pino to play bass on it and I got my son Frazer to play a little flute line and doubled that with a guitar.
Having my mate Pino play on this track adds so much too. He is the best electric bass player in the world!

lyrics

Trouble soon be over
Sorrow will have an end
Trouble soon be over
Oh Sorrow will have an end

I'd talk to God if he could hear me
With only myself to praise
I'd talk to God if he was near me
Pray for better days

Trouble soon etc

God is my soul protector
He's my bosom friend
When trouble rose all around
I know he'd take me in

Trouble soon etc.

Though my burden may be heavy
I won't let it crush me down
Someday I'll rest with Jesus
And wear a starry crown

Trouble etc.
